Documents: Sirhan Sirhan Claims Second Gunman, 'Hypno-Programming'

Sirhan Sirhan, convicted of assassinating Robert F. Kennedy in 1968, has filed new court documents challenging his conviction with a claim of new evidence. Sirhan shot Kennedy and wounded several others in a Los Angeles hotel in June 1968.


An FBI agent points to bullet holes that Sirhan Sirhan's lawyers claim
were caused by a second gunman during the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.

According to the filings, an audio analysis of a recording of the assassination indicates a second shooter. Lawyers for Sirhan also filed witness statements, crime scene photos and statements by investigators purporting to cast doubt on the official version of events. They deny that the shots fired by Sirhan killed Kennedy.

In addition to the claim of a second shooter, Sirhan's lawyers also claim that he was "hypno-programmed" or brainwashed to cause him to fire the shots he did, by parties unknown, who sought to set up Sirhan as a fall guy.

Declassified State Department Cables On Hezbollah's Imad Mughniyah

Declassified documents reveal that the Bush administration was prepared to deal with Hezbollah as a political party if it abandoned the use of violence.

The new documents were released in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by INTELWIRE for State Department cables relating to Hezbollah's terrorist mastermind, Imad Mughniyah, reportedly killed in a car bombing in 2008.

Mughniyah is believed to have killed hundreds of Americans during his terrorist career and is believed to have been responsible for the 1983 terrorist bombings of U.S. targets in Lebanon, among many other attacks. A recent lawsuit also alleges Mughniyah helped facilitate the September 11 attacks (memorandum, PDF).

The new documents also point to Mughniyah's involvement in a host of attacks, including a March 12, 2002, bombing that killed six Israeli civilians in northern Israel, which had not previously been attributed to him.

The cables also seem to represent overtures toward Hezbollah made through diplomatic contacts with Syria in the wake of September 11, although Mughniyah remained a sticking point.

A February 2005 cable supporting an EU effort to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization stated:

[The] U.S. is opposed to Hizballah's use of terror and violence not Hizballah as social/political/religious party in Lebanon. But there should be no recognition of Hizballah as legitimate party until all involvement in violence ceases. There should also be no distinction between the so-called "military" and "political" wings of Hizballah.

The cable went on to indicate that Hezbollah could not be treated as a political party unless its popular leader, Hassan Nasrallah, were to step down and the organization were to cut ties Mughniyah.

Another cable dated May 10, 2002 described a meeting between former U.S. Ambassador Theodore Kattouf and former Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam:

The Ambassador interjected that the U.S. was not concerned about Hizballah's past resistance activities inside Lebanon. Although we strongly disagree with Hizballah's aims, we did not take issue with it playing a social and political role in Lebanon. But Hizballah was implicated in the 1996 Khobar Tower bombings in Saudi Arabia, something the ambassador knows firsthand, since he was the charge, and in bombings in Argentina in the early 90s. Beyond this, the U.S. would neither forget nor forgive Imad Mughniyeh and his associates for their attacks on U.S. personnel in Lebanon during the 1980s.

But a January 2002 cable seemed to indicate intelligence suggesting Mughniyah had already pulled back from involvement with Hezbollah in favor of Iran, stating:

French information indicated that Imad Mughniyeh and his external security organization had distanced themselves from Hizballah proper and were taking more and more of their direction from Tehran.

The documents also describe Mughniyah-related plots to attack French, American and Israeli targets in the Ivory Coast during the 1980s.

Secret British Documents From 1980 Detail Origins Of Western Covert Aid To Afghan Mujahideen

The British National Archives recently released hundreds of pages of previously classified documents pertaining to Afghanistan, including early moves by the U.K. and the United States to provide covert aid to the Afghan mujahideen following the 1979 invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union.

According to the documents, dated from 1980, the U.S. proposed supporting Pakistani refugee camps being used as operating bases by the mujahideen. Some of these bases would later be used by Arab volunteers in the Soviet jihad, including Makhtab al Khidmat, the predecessor group to Al Qaeda.

The documents include suggestions that the mujahideen would need surface-to-air missiles, which would later be supplied by the CIA.

FBI Records Reveal Details Of Nixon-Era Racial Profiling Program Targeting Arabs

INTELWIRE is publishing 196 pages of previously secret FBI documents on the controversial racial profiling program "Operation Boulder," which screened Arab visa applicants during the early 1970s.

The program was created at the direction of President Richard Nixon less than two weeks after the 1972 massacre at the Munich Olympics by members of the Black September Palestinian terrorist organization.

According to a Feb. 20, 1975 memorandum, "the program involves the systematic screening of visa applications submitted by ethnic Arabs anywhere in the world." The program began in 1972 and was terminated by the State Department over the objections of the FBI in 1975.

Applicant names were reviewed by the FBI, CIA, State Department, Secret Service and INS before approval.

At the program's peak, the FBI did background checks on 40 to 50 visa applicants per day. Arabs living in Israel and the Palestinian territories were subjected to checks by the Israeli security services, with the information being routinely forwarded to the FBI. The names of travelers and information provided by the Israelis were then indexed and stored by the FBI for future reference.

Information collected on some subjects included "subversive" (terrorism or security-related) and "non-subversive" (information not pertaining to security). For other subjects, only subversive information was collected. Despite the massive collection effort, only 23 visas were denied between 1972 and 1975.

In a related investigation, the FBI in 1972 "burlgarized" the office of the Arab Information Center, an organization for visiting Arabs in Dallas. The entry was approved by FBI headquarters but apparently lacked a warrant. "Trespass was necessary" in "surveying" the site, according to a Feb. 20, 1975 memorandum.

The office was bugged, and documents found in the office were copied. According to the FBI, the surveillance resulted in the discovery of scores of Fatah agents operating in North America.

What Zach Did...

Zach Chesser pleaded guilty this week to a variety of charges and also signed a cooperation deal, which bodes poorly for his friends at Revolution Muslim, who can likely expect to see Zach's smiling face in court one day soon.

The specific charges that Zach pleaded to are detailed in the document below. Anyone studying the online jihad will find this to be a fascinating document with a fairly detailed description of his online activities.

The charges which will form the basis for Zach's likely 20-year prison sentence include the threats against South Park and, notably, his posting to the Al-Ansar forum the names and contact information of several people who signed up for the "Everybody Draw Mohammed" Facebook page. The personally identifying information posted to the Al Qaeda-linked Web forum were "just a suggestion," Zach wrote.

State Department Cables On Muwafaq Foundation

In light of the court decision this week excusing Yasin Al-Qadi from a terrorism financing case filed by victims of the September 11 attacks, here are a few documents I recently received from the State Department regarding the Muwafaq Foundation, Al-Qadi's charity.

State Department Cable, 10/4/1993, "The Impact of [Government of Sudan] Propaganda"

This cable broadly discusses Sudan's aggressive program of Islamization, and the role of several NGOS including Muwafaq in a fleeting reference.

State Department Cable, 9/21/1994, "Anatomy of an Islamist NGO"

This is a detailed account of the Muwafaq Foundation, except that the State Department has redacted derogatory information about the charity citing a "national security" exemption to the Freedom of Information Act. It's not clear to me what could possibly be so important in a 1994 document that it justifies a total redaction of the section dealing with Muwafaq's questionable activities, but I hope to find out after my appeal. The unredacted portion is derived from a meeting between a State Department political officer in Khartoum and several members of Muwafaq's leadership.

The document notes Muwafaq has projects in Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Lebanon. It also notes that Muwafaq has "representatives" in the United States.

State Department Cable, 10/15/2001, Terrorist Fundraising E.O. -- Yassin Al-Qadi

Shortly after the U.S. Treasury Department designated Yasin Al-Qadi and the Muwafaq Foundation as terrorist financiers in 2001, Al-Qadi requested a meeting with the U.S. consul in Jeddah. This secret memo shows that the meeting was scheduled but does not reflect whether it took place or what was discussed.

State Department Cable, 8/22/2006, Saudi Terrorist Financier Yassin Qadi Claims Victory After Turks Release His Assets

The title of this cable from the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh is fairly descriptive. It describes Al-Qadi's successes in getting his name cleared in Turkey and elsewhere. The cable notes that "Qadi's public claim that the [Saudi government] supports his legal efforts is spurious; the [Saudi government] froze his assets in the Kingdom."

The FBI launched three separate investigations into the leaking of classified material made public by newspaper columnist Robert Novak in the 1980s, newly obtained records show.

Previously secret FBI files reveal that the bureau pursued Novak's sources after reading columns Novak and his writing partner, Rowland Evans, published in The Washington Post in 1983 and 1987. Agents also tried to identify the source of classified information that Novak divulged in 1983 on the television show "The McLaughlin Group."

New Yorkers Arrested As Al Qaeda Members, Technical Advisors

With Times Square dominating the attention of most terrorism watchers last week, the indictment of two new American Al Qaeda operatives went largely unnoticed. The two New Yorkers were charged with providing technology, technical assistance and money to Al Qaeda.

WESAM EL-HANAFI, a/k/a "Khaled," and SABIRHAN HASANOFF, a/k/a "Tareq," the defendants, would and did agree to provide al Qaeda with, among other things, computer advice and assistance, services, and currency. [...]

Apparently Al Qaeda didn't get the memo that they're broke, because these guys raised about $50,000 for operations, according to the indictment, although the flow of money isn't totally clear. El-Hanafi also met "two members of Al Qaeda" in Yemen. No word on whether everyone's favorite American cleric Anwar Awlaki was one of them.

Hanafi and Hasanoff seem to be serious operators, allegedly recruiting people in the United States to join Al Qaeda and accepting bayat oaths of allegiance on behalf of the organization.

El-Hanafi also purchased seven Casio watches for Al Qaeda. These watches have become notorious as a jihadi fashion statement after Ramzi Yousef figured out how to make a similar model into a timer-detonator for very small but powerful bombs.

This is just the latest indicator that the Al Qaeda threat, as we knew it before 9/11, has not disappeared, even if the particulars of its organization have changed. To put it in some perspective, the September 11 attacks cost about $500,000 to pull off. These guys had at least $50,000 to work with, whether they raised it here or abroad, and that's enough money to get something done.

Exclusive: State Department Cables on Benazir Bhutto Assassination

The U.N. this week released a 70-page report on the 2007 assassination of Benazir Bhutto in the midst of her campaign to reclaim the post of president of Pakistan. The report excoriated the Pakistani government for its failed investigation and particularly a failure to investigate the possibility that elements within the Pakistani officials were involved in the killing -- a possibility the report faced squarely. According to the report:

The Commission believes that the failure of the police to investigate effectively Ms. Bhutto’s assassination was deliberate. These officials, in part fearing intelligence agencies’ involvement, were unsure of how vigorously they ought to pursue actions, which they knew, as professionals, they should have taken.

These concerns are notably not reflected in a flurry of State Department cables issued after the assassination and exclusively obtained by INTELWIRE through the Freedom of Information Act. These documents point clearly to U.S. concerns for stability in Pakistan and toward continued cooperation with the Pakistani government in the U.S. war on terrorism, but they offer no scrutiny or consideration of the culpability of the Pakistani government itself.

White Supremacist 'Plot' To Kill Obama

Daniel Cowart pleaded guilty yesterday to plotting to kill then-candidate Barak Obama in October of 2008.

Cowart, a white supremacist, met a like-minded individual, Paul Schlesselman, on the Internet, according to Cowart's guilty plea. They discussed going on a killing spree during which they would kill 88 people. The number 88 is used by white supremacists as code for "Heil Hitler" (H being the eight letter of the alphabet, so HH=88). They also discussed beheading 14 African-Americans (14 is another indirect reference to white supremacist ideology, link).

According to a criminal complaint, they also discussed killing black schoolchildren and eventually decided that the coda to their spree of violence would be to assassinate Obama while wearing white tuxedos and top hats.

After discussing plans for armed robberies to financing weapons purchases, the two men and a female friend cased the home of an elderly they had picked out for a home invasion, but backed out at the last minute, opting instead to go on a vandalism spree.

Instead, they loaded up their car with weapons and decorated it with white supremacist and neo-Nazi symbols including a large swastika and the words "Honk if you love Hitler" written on the bumper. The brilliant idea here was to drive around until they provoked a confrontation with a random person, whom they would then shoot. This plan brought them to the attention of the local sheriff, resulting in their arrest.

Five members of a white supremacist group were indicted by a grand jury for planning an armed assault on a firearms company stockpile, illegally gun sales and attempting to manufacture grenades.

The group was known as the Connecticut White Wolves and later as Battalion 14. Members of the group named in the indictment include: Kenneth Zrallack, Alexander Defelice, Edwin T. Westmoreland, William R. Bolton and David Sutton.

Defendant COLLEEN R. LAROSE, a/k/a “Fatima LaRose,” a/k/a “JihadJane,” and others known and unknown to the Grand Jury, recruited men online to wage violent jihad in South Asia and Europe. [...]

On or about December 8, 2008, Unindicted Co-Conspirator (“CC”) #1, a resident of a South Asian country (whose full e-mail address is known to the Grand Jury), sent an electronic communication to defendant COLLEEN R. LAROSE, a/k/a “Fatima LaRose,” a/k/a “JihadJane,” stating CC #1’s desire to wage jihad and become a “shahed” (martyr). On or about December 9, 2008, defendant COLLEEN R. LAROSE, a/k/a “Fatima LaRose,” a/k/a “JihadJane,” sent an electronic communication to CC #1, replying that she also desires to become a martyr.[...]

On or about February 20, 2009, defendant COLLEEN R. LAROSE, a/k/a “Fatima LaRose,” a/k/a “JihadJane,” sent an electronic communication to CC #1, advising CC #1 that her physical appearance would allow her to “blend in with many people,” which “may be a way to achieve what is in my heart.”[...]

The problem here should be self-evident. Jihad Jane doesn't look to be the sharpest tack in the bag, but she doesn't have to be. Although we don't have an official national policy of racial profiling, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that a tiny blonde woman is going to attract a lower level of screening in an airport than a burly Pakistani male, nine times out of ten.

On the bright side (such as it is), given her background, profile and apparent capability, she is not someone who could easily execute a sophisticated attack on her own initiative, or even necessarily with extensive training. If you look at the major successful terrorist attacks in the United States, you will find that most of them involve at least one operative who is extremely intelligent and who has often received some kind of formal training in military or terrorist tactics.

Is Jihad Jane a threat of magnitude under her own power? Probably not. But she would have been a potent tool in the hands of someone like Ramzi Yousef or Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, and it's a very good thing she has been taken off the playing field.

More Detail on 'Michael Jackson's Neverland Favorites'

Previous reports stemming from the FBI's release of files on entertainer Michael Jackson led to speculation that a child pornography tape titled "Michael Jackson's Neverland Favorites, An All-Boy Anthology" was obtained during a search of one of Jackson's homes.

A supplemental release received today from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement indicates the tape has no direct connection to Jackson, but was obtained during an unrelated child pornography prosecution in Florida. According to forensic analysis, the tape contained no original material and had been remastered from previous recordings.

The U.S. Air Force paid more than $38 million in federal contracts to Baud Telecommunications, a subsidiary of the Saudi Binladin Group, since 2001. More than half of those contracts are dated after the attacks of September 11 -- and the contracts continued through 2007.

A mistrial has been declared in the case of Hal Turner, the white supremacist radio host accused of inciting violence against law enforcement figures and judges. The mistrial due to deadlocked jury does not appear to hinge on the accusation that Turner was an FBI informant, but much digital ink has been spilled on this subject during the course of the trial. American Jihadists

AmericanJihadists.com is a new Web site in the INTELWIRE.com family. This site will start as a document-oriented blog connecting to resources and documents on the subject of American citizens who take part in military jihad activities.

The blog will give way in 2010 to a broader and more ambitious Web site that provides detailed source material from my forthcoming book, "American Jihadists." I hope to have an update soon with details about the book release.

The topic of "American Jihadists" is fairly complex and has not received the media attention it deserves. There are dozens of cases of American citizens who have been arrested and indicted for various jihad-related activities.
