Site News: Updated Pages

I've updated the Web site for my book, "Jihad Joe: Americans Who Go to War in the Name of Islam," which can now be found at http://jihadjoebook.com/. The new site has been cleaned up a bit, and I've added some early praise for the book, which will be updated with new material between now and the release.

Separately, I'm trying out a new format for the Intelwire Daily Brief, which is now being powered by Scoop.it. The tradeoff here is that the old version, which used paper.li, automatically updated from tagged stories on my Twitter feed.

The new page lets me customize headlines and promote stories so that the lead story is always what I think is most important, as opposed to the old page which prioritized stories automatically.

The downside is that it will be more difficult for me to keep the new page updated when traveling or otherwise busy, so we'll see how it goes. For now, at least, I'm trying to keep it updated throughout the day, given how much is going on in the news. Later, I'll probably settle on fairly predictable morning and evening editions.

I know the old page appealed to many folks, so it will continue, and you can click here to read it or follow it. It's now set to publish twice a day, so the news will be fresher. Since it's automatically generated, I don't see any downside in keeping it up and running indefinitely. I suspect the new page will ultimately work out for the best, but I'll let you know how I like it after a few weeks.

INTELWIRE Records 1 Million Page Views

INTELWIRE today recorded its one millionth page view. It's been quite a progression over the last couple of years. INTELWIRE began as a very small operation focused mainly on posting and reporting from government documents. It has evolved into a valued source for authors, journalists and analysts, with the majority of readers coming from the media and government, including policy-makers, law enforcement, the intelligence community and the military.

Today INTELWIRE is part of the Multifaceted Media Group (MMG), bringing its exclusive primary sources to a wide range of projects, including international documentaries such as "Sarajevo Ricochet," a look at Al Qaeda's involvement in the War in Bosnia which will debut within the next couple of months. In addition to INTELWIRE reports, MMG provides comprehensive services to media professionals in document and knowledge managemen and professional research services, as well as maintaining a massive archive of stock footage -- license-ready video and audio focused on terrorism and extremism.

There are big things ahead in the coming year. In early 2011, I will publish my first book, taking an investigative and analytical look at the phenomenon of American jihadists. We'll be releasing the title and ordering information within a couple of months. A second book -- a work of investigative journalism covering an important aspect of the war on terrorism -- is scheduled for late 2011 or early 2012. Two major MMG-produced documentaries are also in development.

American Jihadists

AmericanJihadists.com is a new Web site in the INTELWIRE.com family. This site will start as a document-oriented blog connecting to resources and documents on the subject of American citizens who take part in military jihad activities.

The blog will give way in 2010 to a broader and more ambitious Web site that provides detailed source material from my forthcoming book, "American Jihadists." I hope to have an update soon with details about the book release.

The topic of "American Jihadists" is fairly complex and has not received the media attention it deserves. There are dozens of cases of American citizens who have been arrested and indicted for various jihad-related activities. There are also cases in which Americans have taken part in military jihad overseas but have not been indicted and those who are not directly linked to terrorism.

Welcome to American Jihadists

Welcome to AmericanJihadists.com, a new Web site in the INTELWIRE.com family. This site will start as a blog connecting to resources and documents on the subject of American citizens who take part in military jihad activities.

The blog will give way in 2010 to a broader and more ambitious Web site that provides detailed source material from my forthcoming book, "American Jihadists." I hope to have an update soon with details about the book release.

The subject of American Jihadists is fairly complex and has not received the media attention it deserves. There are dozens of cases of American citizens who have been arrested and indicted for various jihad-related activities.

There are also cases in which Americans have taken part in military jihad overseas but have not been indicted and those who are not linked to terrorism. While some in the media characterize jihad as synonymous with terrorism, that is not always the case, and this distinction will be explored further in the book. However the majority of the cases featured on this site will have some sort of terrorism component, because those are the stories which become known to the public.

You will note several posts which go back as far as March 2008. To get up and running, I imported relevant entries (along with their original post dates) from the Intelfiles.com blog. The site's actual launch date is today, Wednesday, November 4, 2009.

A final note: There are many inside and outside of the Muslim community who will point out that jihad is not always associated with a military dimension. This site is specifically about people -- mostly men -- who take part in military jihad and related support activities. The people being profiled here themselves describe their activities as jihad, and where applicable, this site will use their terminology.
