Omar Hammami and the Trolls of Jihad

For months now, a Twitter account credibly purporting to speak for American jihadist Omar Hammami, aka Abu Mansour Al Amriki, has been languishing on the Internet, followed mostly by a small crew of Western journalists and people who study or work on terrorism issues. 

But after a new video, a new manifesto accusing Shabab leaders of wrongdoing by name (previously he only implied who was responsible), a renewed claim that Shabab was coming to kill him any day now, and a spate of recent tweets, members of Al Shabab, as well as non-Shabab Somalis and other Muslims (some radical, some not) have discovered that the mujahid best known for his pro-jihad raps is frequently online and available for thoughtful conversation... or for trolling. 

Hammami's latest exposé -- centered on poor treatment of foreign fighters in Somalia  and corruption at the top, including assassinations of fellow jihadists -- has received decidedly negative reviews from his peers online. You will find a representative list of recent comments below. 

The primary lesson in all this is one for the CVE community -- it's extremely unclear whether efforts to spread goodwill prevent radicalization, but disruption surely disrupts. You will find my Five Ds of CVE well represented in the text below.  About 40 or 50 authors are represented here, some more prolific than others, but with only rare exceptions, they think Hammami is a bad dude. 

You'll find many accusations, including that he turned on Al Shabab because they wouldn't let him have a car, that he was and is an American spy, and that the recent French hostage rescue mission was actually meant to extract Hammami, as well as mournful comments about the damage he is doing to jihad, Muslims and Somalia in general.
